Reserves

Emmanuel faculty can place Library-owned or personally-owned original items on the reserve shelf for student use in support of course instruction.

Each item to be placed on reserve must be accompanied by a completed reserve request form and submitted at the circulation desk to be processed by the Distribution Librarian.  Forms are located at the circulation desk or through the above link.

New reserve forms must be submitted at the beginning of each semester for all reserve items.  The Library cannot retain permanent reserves.

By submitting materials for reserve, the instructor consents to adhere to the Emmanuel College reserve policies and rights.

All requests will be processed in the order in which they are received. The normal processing time is approximately two business days although this may vary. An email notification will be sent to the instructor once the item(s) have been processed and are available for student use.

Library Rights
When an item has been placed on reserve, it is considered property of the Cardinal Cushing Library; the library is not responsible for any theft or damage of personal items placed on reserve.

Returning Items:
Emmanuel College Library: First FloorPlease give the Distribution Librarian 24-hour notice when removing an item from reserve. Otherwise, the items will be on reserve until the date indicated on the reserve form or until the end of each semester.

Copyright Guidelines:
Cardinal Cushing Library has developed Guidelines for use of Reserves. They are based on the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries (January 2012).  Please also refer to: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/

The Library reserves the right to refuse an item for reserve if, in its judgment, acceptance of the item will result in copyright infringement.

The library will not accept the following for reserve without written permission from the copyright owner:
  • Photocopies that are not made by the Library from an original.
The Library cannot accept photocopied materials.  The instructor must provide an original work, which the Library will photocopy according to copyright restrictions.  The Library will produce only one copy from the original work for reserve.  Please refer to the copyright guidelines below for further information.
  • Consumable works: The duplication of works that are consumed in the classroom, such as standardized tests, exercises and workbooks, normally requires permission from the copyright owner, 17 U.S.C.sec.107 (4).
  • Creation of anthologies as basic text material for a course: This will require appropriate permissions. The Library will put one copy of such course material on reserve.
If the above copyright restrictions are not followed, items will not be placed on reserve and will be returned to the faculty member immediately.

Copies of entire entities: “Fair Use” according to copyright allows reproduction of an appropriate amount of a single source that does not impinge upon the rights of the copyright holder.  Each calendar year the Library will reproduce up to five articles from a single journal title.

Copies of media:  Recorded copies of CD’s, DVDs, or video tapes are strictly prohibited. Only commercial products are accepted for reserve.

Should faculty members want to place on reserve a photocopy of material that exceeds these guidelines, they will need to obtain copyright permission in writing and bring the permission to the Library before the item will be placed on reserve.

Members of the Emmanuel College community are expected to be mindful of the restrictions imposed on them by copyright law and comply with copyright policies and laws.  Faculty are encouraged to speak with a librarian for help finding appropriate course materials among our online subscription resources, including more than 2,000 journals.
