Emmanuel College Library History

Trace the history of the Emmanuel College Library from its origins in the Administration Building through the opening of the Cardinal Cushing Library in 1965 and to its place in today's academic environment.
Administration Building, Library, 1925-1926

An empty Emmanuel College Library that was located on the first floor of the Administration Building in the 1920s. To the left is the door to the corridor (See Epilogue, 1926). 

Alumnae Hall, Science Library, 1950-1951

The Science Library, located on the first floor of Alumnae Hall in 1950-1951. Seniors can be identified by their academic robes (See Epilogue, 1951).

Administration Building, Library, 1953-1954

Emmanuel College Library Staff, 1956-1957

Sister Dorothea, former-president Sister Margaret Patricia, and Sister Marie Mildred review  review  a medieval  Gradual (liturgical song book), circa 1400 in the Administration Building Library  in the Administration Building Library in the 1956-1957 (See Epilogue, 1957).

Suzanne Murphy, Maura Breen and Martha Eagan read periodicals in the Administration Building's Marilyn Lee Library in 1957, named in honor of Marilyn Lee '51 who died prematurely of leukemia (See Emmanuel Alumnae Magazine, Winter 1957).

Cardinal Cushing Library, Groundbreaking Ceremony, June 2, 1963, n. I

Richard Cardinal Cushing signs a document beside an Emmanuel College senior at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Emmanuel College Library site on June 2, 1963. The Library would later be renamed the Cardinal Cushing Library, in honor of the support Cardinal Cushing gave to Emmanuel College through the years. The negative of the image is housed with the photograph.
